Shakti is a Sanskrit word (Devanagari: शक्ति) which root Shak means “to be able”. Therefore a possible meaning for Shakti is “power” or even better “Self-empowerment”.
Shakti refers to a primordial creative and cosmic energy, which has the force to transform and create everything throughout the Universe. Since it is believed to be the personification of the Divine Feminine, Hinduism refers to this powerful energy as the Great Divine Mother. Although Shakti manifests itself into a female embodiment as creativity and fertility, it is also present in a male embodiment as its potential and unmanifest power.
Shakti is responsible for all creation, but it is also responsible of all changes happening throughout the creation; as a result, it’s a strong and demanding transformational force of liberation. It has different forms, and it is commonly known as Kundalini-Shakti, which represents its asleep state. Shakti in its Kundalini form is depicted as a dormant serpent rolled up for 3 times and half on itself. As Kundalini, Shakti is considered to be a mysterious psychophysical force, which represents a great potential within every human being, and it needs to be awaken. However, just a few of us find a way to fully awaken the Kundalini and expand their awareness, and their own level of consciousness. When our lives are ruled by a dormant Kundalini, we live in a state of Maya-Shakti (Illusion). When the Kundalini is awaken, each individual lives in a state of Chit-Shakti (Awareness and Consciousness). when our state of awareness is in Chit-Shakti we are close to the source of creation, when our states is in Maya-Shakti we are far away from it.
Therefore we can say, Kundalini is the power of creation dormant at the base of our spine, and it is a potential, so it is still not in full power of expression. Shakti is the power of creation, which is also knowledge and wisdom, and it is our potential fully awaken, which gives the power to create coherently and harmoniously with the rest of the universe. Kundalini-Shakti is called Prana-Shakti as a result of an awaken power that creates the connection between our individual and limited self and our universal and unlimited self. The union of these two selves is aimed by every types of yoga school. Shakti can take many forms and names into our material world, but this incredible force is known mostly by three main forms or aspects: Saraswati, Lakshmi, Parvati (Kali/Uma). they respectively manifest into the real world as: knowledge/wisdom, beauty/wealth, and integrity/bravery. They are known as the wives of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva.
